Depends who you ask, really. However, I'll leave it to Ry as he knows more about it than me.

Ok for a full description of Emo you might want to just check it out on wikipedia, but that article is pretty complicated so I'll try and give you my interpretation and simple view of what emo is:

Emo is short for Emotional Hardcore music, the true origin of emo is from the 1980's in Washington, the original Emo consisted mainly of heavy music with very emotional lyrics, the band members were very heavily involved with the music, they became very emotional on stage. The original emo music and any real Emotional Hardcore is very "slit my wrists" kind of stuff, not happy and extremely emotional.

Thats proper emo ^^, now if you look at a lot of bands such as Fall Out Boy and Panic! At the disco, they have been labelled emo, perhaps because they follow the style of a lot of "emo" kids, emo people tend to listen to "emo" music, its hard to explain, maybe best to read up on wikipedia about emo people. But the label of Emo has been wrongly used with bands like this, they are simply pop-punk, and have absolutely no similarity with the true Emo bands.

I've tried to explain, but its hard, basically understand that proper emo is "Emotional Hardcore" and not simply emotional music, as some people seem to think it is.

Its odd that now hardcore emo is seen by most as a sub-genre of emo when in fact that is where the origins of the scene can be found

Wasn't that great? A mash up of Bootilicious and Dirrty I think. Very good, I like the live lounge tracks bands do. Will Young did a great version of Hey Ya by Outkast last year.

The Final fantasy collections of music. bringing back nostalgia and stuff, I always figured ff9 was some of the more emotional music, ff8 had the action type while ff7 had the scarerier but not so sure, always loved ff9's medieval type music though especially freyas theme tune.
