I was about to say Jeremy Irons can save many movies... then remembered D and D. How tragic.

You're meant to remember the triumphs not the tragedies!! Rolling Eyes

Just seen this: It's awful.
They've reworked the plot so it's utterly unrecognisable, removed any geographical sense, deleted most of the locations, done away with all subtlety and twists in the plot and messed up the characters.
I won't go into any detail as it would spoil the book for those who haven't yet read it, but DO NOT go and see the film. It is dreadful. Evil or Very Mad

You realise that in telling people to not go to see the film you only encourage them to go and see it anyway.

I didn't think the movie was too bad, especially considering the steaming turd of a book it was based one, but without Jeremy Irons' role it'd have been awful.

Still, Hamish Macbeth looked evil!! Very Happy

Laughing Why is it I'm not convinced of your sincerity there?

I'm not sure he did look evil... perhaps to smaller people. I found him more amusing than scary.

I'm a fan of both Eragon & Eldest. Yes it's true he was 15 when he first wrote them, and his amateurishness [new word get used to it] really shows. Plus his parents, or some family member is in the publishing business so obviously they're going to publish his work.

The story takes elements from a lot of stories, mainly LotR, Star Wars, Dragon Riders of Pern, a Wizard of Earthsee to name a few.

The main character is just Dragon, with an E instead of D, how lazy is that?

One thing that really annoyed me was the blatant copying of Tolkien's character names, with but one letter difference.

Arwen Arwden
Isengard Isenstar
Elessar Elessari
Morgoth Morgothar
Imladris Imiladris
Caranthir Ceranthor
Isildur Isidar
Mithril Mithrim

They don't mean the same as Tolkien's words do, but you have to admit that they're too similar.

Paolini's Dwarves and Elfs are right out of the pages of Lord of the Rings with a few changes, which don't work.

For example, Arya, a elf tells Eragon he must give up eating meat, and that the elves do not use any animal products. Then later in the story she is described as wearing LEATHER clothes.

It's like he sat down and thought 'i'll write star wars, but with dragons! and i'll copy X book and Y book too!"

Once you put aside the blatant copying, it's a rather interesting read.

No it's not. Its' crap and should never, ever have been published. Mammy and Daddy had worked in publishing and commissioned lots of copies to be self-published. The they sent him, armed with copies, on a tour of the US dressed as some kind of pilgrim dishing out said copies. The media suddenly took note, then a major publisher took note and off the back of that he was published.

Eragon is awful writing. It's plagiarism and wasn't published based on its own merit. I admire the discipline to write a book at any age, let alone starting one at, what, 15? He didn't finish until her was about 19 though. But, when I read a book, I don't care how old/young the writer is. There's nothing original in the book, at all, and what is there has been written many, many times in the past and far, far better.

You have a point. I've read both books, and enjoyed them, but that was before i realised it wasn't original. I'll still read the final one, to see how he ends things, and if he sticks a few more cliche, we've allready had the "i am your father" ending in book two. He's gonna find a ring out of nowhere, and has to destroy it.
