I was the other way around, I was looking forward to the series actually coming to an end because it had been building for the last 5 books.

I hate coming to the end of a series. Obviously, I want to know what happens, but at the same time it's over once you finish the last page. Sad

SEMI-SPOILERS

Elfsorrow first (but not because of the obvious reason - it's a fine book, and introduces us to Calaius).

Dawnthief second (the first book, it starts it all, as Lizzy says...)

Demonstorm (the end of The Raven. For now Wink )

Difficult, I voted for Dawnthief, although I also lived Elfsorrow, but ist was so sad Crying or Very sad . Dawnthief was the first one, so it's somehow special.

For me the best (and also worst) book was Demonstorm. I chose this because the sheer amoutn of enemies the Raven and Co. were up against created a sense of impossibility, but in the back of my mind i knew the Raven would prevail.

It is also the worst because i had to accept the death of a lot of my Favourite characters. I had thought i was hallucinating when i saw Thraun, Erienne, Ark and Hirad all perish almost at once. it was truly devastating for the reader but was gripping all the same.

Spoilers - Elfsorrow ( at least it could be a spoiler if i remembered right)

Dawnthief definately , although i loved Noonshade because I was so happy to see and read about the whole gang again , and they had become more developed by then. I dont like elfsorrow as much as everyone else , dont get me wrong it was great. But I found it a little too sad , maybe I like happy endings too much.
I cant remember it to well but wasnt the illnes started by someone taking the thumb of a statue or something?, I think I will have to dig them out again and re-read.

yeah thats right, Captain Yron took the thumb from the statue of Yniss, triggering the Elfsorrow, and only by getting the thumb back would stop it.

****SPOILERS***************

I am going to have to go with ShadowHeart on this one.
All of James books have terrific pace, but for me Shadowheart especailly the fighting within the walls of the dark college is James writing at the height of his powess. The book can not be read fast enough, it's pace and motion subline. Also I am basis, as it was the novel that got me into the Raven.

Elfsorrow is a close second, the ending with it's high emoutions and escalated stand offs is par excellence.

demonstorm for me just due to the fact I finished it in the libray at old college waiting to meet someone and was so upset I didn't actually notice them talking to me for about five minutes then spent the net hour telling anyone who would listen that life was irrelevant till you read the Raven (even spoke to people I didn't know and it was quite humourus seeing them smiling and nodding wondering who this weirdo was and wether they should give me their money). For the memories and realisations and the meeting of a missed friend, this was my fav.
