hmm...In the middle of a few.
I started reading Howard Engel's The Man Who Forgot How to Read. Its a really amazing book. I got to meet Engel at the Toronto Book Expo this year and got my advanced proof signed. Its basically the story of how, after a sudden stroke, Engel woke up one day and realized he couldn't read at all anymore. It chronicles his healing and how he was able to regain his life and his love for reading and writing.
I'm also re-reading Lord Foul's Bane by Donaldson. I tend to read it every few years. An amazing story and well worth it.
And I just finished reading Time Travelers by Archer. Its technically a 9-12 age group book but I work in a book store so I try to read a little of something from every section. Its a really great story about a little boy and girl who get transported back through time to Victorian London and their adventures while trying to find the machine that brought them there and get back home. Its a great book for all ages and I would put it up against Harry Potter in a second. |

Just finished reading Robin McKinley's 'Dragonhaven', a tale of environmentalists and dragons for young adults. It's a good read in a lot of ways, McKinley seems to have put more thought into dragon biology than any other author I know (for a start!) What lets it down though is the portrayal of the main character (Jake). The story is in a first person perspective (his) and he just can't seem to tell a decent story, he keeps chopping/changing and more often than not won't finish off what he's started talking about. This makes reading 'Dragonhaven' a very stilted and frustrating experience in places... My full review is Here
I'm now well into Naomi Novik's 'Empire of Ivory' which is more like what I'm after in a book about dragons! _________________ Graeme's Fantasy Book Review

Just finished reading Naomi Novik's 'Empire of Ivory'. It's definitely on a par with the rest of her work but in terms of plot I kept getting the feeling that there was nothing new going on here... Having said that though, the book ends on a great cliffhanger! The relationship between Captain Laurence and Temeraire is always a joy to read though and it was no exception here. My full review is Here.
I've now started reading 'Storm Dragon' by James Wyatt... _________________ Graeme's Fantasy Book Review

After I finished my a-levels I swore a mighty oath that I would never read anything by DH Lawrence again...
Just finished reading James Wyatt's 'Storm Dragon'. I don't normally read tie-in books but the 'Forgotten Realms' books are turning out to be pretty good, this one is no exception but is let down by info-dumping (lots of it!) and a sense of closure that seems weird seeing as this is the start of a trilogy... My full review is Here. I'm now (finally) starting on 'The Toyminator' by Robert Rankin. I need a good laugh and this book is just what I'm after! _________________ Graeme's Fantasy Book Review

I didn't like D H Lawrence much either.
Just started Conrad William's London Revanant (on a bit of a horror thriller phase atm) _________________

Just finished reading 'The Toyminator' by Robert Rankin. I needed something daft to get me through the weekend and 'Toyminator' did the business in style! Had me switching between laughing out loud and thinking, "that actually makes a weird kind of sense..." My full review is Here. I'm now starting Jennifer Rardin's 'Once Bitten, Twice Shy' and hoping like mad that it doesn't turn into another 'Anita Blake style' vampire sex book... _________________ Graeme's Fantasy Book Review

Just finished reading Jennifer Rardin's 'Once Bitten, Twice Shy'. It's another urban/paranormal fantasy with a gutsy heroine, who fancies her vampire colleague but this one is actually pretty good. For a start, the story takes precedence over the usual sex scenes and it's also pretty much one big gunfight from start to finish. Kinda like 'Blade' but notched up a couple of gears! My full review is Here.
I'm now reading 'Demon Eyes' (L.H. Maynard & M.P.N. Sims) and 'Auralia's Colours' (Jeff Overstreet), one is shaping up to be really good while the other, well... isn't... _________________ Graeme's Fantasy Book Review

Naomi Novik is on my to read list.
However, at the moment I'm re-reading Gemmell's Legend while in work. The book is still as good as I remember plot wise (it's about the fourth time I've read it, but it's been a few years) but you can really tell how his prose improved over the 20 odd years he wrote for.
It got me thinking... should authors re-visit their work and re-write it?
At home I'm about to start reading Hunters Moon by David Devereux. Devereux is a "magic user" and paranormal investigator so as you can guess the book is kinda like a UK Harry Dresden. Not sure if it is any good, only picked it up as Joe Abercrombie mentioned it on his sit and Gollancz published it. _________________ "You know what Jack Burton always says... what the hell?" |
