They also had a great mythology. Some very interesting concepts of war.

plus they discovered America first time round, but kinda didn't realise it. >.>

As an added point They originated as traders, who's tradings posts in foreign lands, often happened to frequently grow into colonies. They had Earldoms and kingdoms. They were swedes, daes, norwegians, scandinavians, it just so happened that they suffered from a populaation increase and large scale expansion began. Christian fear from when they attempted to obtain land like the raid on Linisfarne was just because they didn't understand.

And on the point of ships. Longships are actually a potent symbol of the the era, being the ultimate expression of their enegetic culture, it's importance reflected in in the profusion of ship representation found on graves and graffiti.
