There's a book out by a new author called Brian Ruckley. The book is Winterbirth and I wondered if anyone has read it yet? It's a hardback so I would like to hear what it is like before committing myself!

Not even heard of it, sorry. But it does sound interesting, so i'm probably going to check that out now.
If I read it before you, i'll let you know. Smile

I have read it, and yes, it really ought to appeal to Barclayfans.

Check out www.brianruckley.com. There's a free sample of the book (the prologue, which ought to whet your appetite nicely) and he writes a regular blog as well.

Ruckley's not the new Gemmell - I don't think anyone can really claim that, although if anyone comes close it's probably our James (although he'll hate me for saying that) - but he does address many of the same themes: heroism, friendship, honour, and the imprecise nature of good and evil. And his world-building is rather supberb.

Oh, and a spot of disclosure: the website is another one of mine... Very Happy

And you can get signed copies if you're into that sort of thing, Haven!

I have a copy: it's in the ever burgeoning 'to be read' pile. Having had a read of the beginning and a quick skim, I can see similarities between it and other books/writers, though as yet I'm not really struck by major differences from the rest in the pile. Can see hints of Gemmell, Barclay and Erikson in there, which may be good enough to make you read it!

I do like Joe Abercrombie's latest, The Blade Itself though. Book 2 seems even better so far.

I've not read it but I have heard good things, he's on my 'check this author out' list once my current pile of books has been exhausted.
